The past 70 years have witnessed remarkable ecological progress in southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.

For a long time, residents living along the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet’s Shannan were plagued by sandstorms.

But things changed after the Shannan people devoted decades to desert control by building shelterbelt forests.
